FLASH – a questionnaire for the captain Ladislav Nagy

ADDED: 2.1.2018

During the previous association break we interviewed our leader Laco Nagy. From this interview we are offering you the most interesting questions and answers. Flash - this questionnaire shall become regular.

Laco, you were born in Košice so there is no doubt about your relationship to our town, however, what do you like the most?
We have the most beautiful main street in Slovakia with the most beautiful St. Elizabeth's Church. Our main street is just beautiful; Bratislava does not have one like that. Of course, we have also many other historical sights, therefore I think we have the most beautiful city.

If you had not become a professional hockey-player, what would be your job?
It's hard to say. I do not know what would I study if I went to school for longer time. Maybe I would find a job or went to work abroad.

Do you have a popular club in Europe? In NHL?
I used to play in NHL so my popular clubs would be in Arizona where I played. I liked it in Dallas, it is beautiful there, Los Angeles is just gorgeous.

Besides hockey, what are your other interests?
Currently basically none. I have a family so after practices I go home and spend my time with children. I try to be with my family as much as possible.

Our fans would like to know what movies you like.
I can watch any good movie, maybe except for horrors. J

The fans often discuss about the level of the Slovak Tipsport league; how would you assess it?
The performance of our league is not bad and it has definitely improved. The teams signed many foreign players, Canadians and Americans. And this increases competition. Even though the Czech league is a little bit higher level, ours is good as well. I would welcome more professional approach of the referees, but I do not want to talk about them here, in order to avoid penalization. Let's say, there is a lot to see in our league.

How are you satisfied with your performance and performance of our team?
I will start with myself. First, I was seeking myself and I struggled. I had and injury and was getting into it slow. But after some time I was in better shape and played better. Now I am a little bit out again, my groin slowed me down, but I will try to return as soon as possible and perform like in my last matches, when I was playing well. As a team we were not good in our first ten matches, and in the chart some teams got ahead of us. But then in next matches we showed that we have a good team and can play good hockey and please our fans. We started to score more often, we play good at home, just outside Košice we struggle a bit. Sometimes we play well, sometimes not so good, we do not win as much as we would like to. So mainly this is what we need to improve. We need to start winning not only domestic matches.

How do you get ready for matches? Do you have any rituals?
I practice the same warm-up, spurt and stretch. I do not have any ritual, but I always start to get dressed 20 minutes before the match. Maybe, this is my ritual, I always observe the 20 minutes.

What are your thoughts right before the match?
Most often about my legs, so they are agile, not hard and skate good. Sometimes I think about this, because when a player does not have good legs, he struggles, does not skate and his head is not functioning properly.  When a player skates well, then his head functions well and the player plays well.

You definitely experienced a situation when you were lazy to practice. How do you overcome such situation?
It happened a few times that I was very tired and sometimes even frustrated, e.g. when we lost a match before. I did not event want to go practice. Nevertheless, I was always surprised that this was the time when my practice went well. I do not know why, but also my older team-mates confirmed that when they felt tired and down, as soon as they hit the ice their feelings were great. I do not know what is in it, but this always helped me.

How many hockey sticks do you need for one season?
It is a hard question, it depends. In the United States I needed almost 80 - 90 hockey sticks, but they were wooden sticks and I played as much as 100 matches per season. Here we have newer hockey sticks and we play up to 70 matches, but I definitely consume 30 hokey sticks.

What is their weakness? Do they break?
They do not break. I have “aimers”, which I order form the United States. Each of them lasts 1 - 2 matches, then they get soft and are not suitable for a game. I keep it for practices, but for a match I need a harder one, so I replace it for a new one. So when I shoot, it performs as I expect. J

Do you perceive the atmosphere during the matches?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If the atmosphere is perfect, I definitely perceive it, but sometimes I am so into the game that I do not notice people. Even my wife sometimes says that I do not see them, that I do not take a look at the tribune. But when a player is too much into the game he just does not notice other things that much.

For how long hockey carrier do you dare?
I do not know yet. I have this season ahead of me, so I will see, how I feel after it. The next season, if I am willing and feel well, I will solve the next season afterwards. Maybe I would play one more year, hard to say right now, so I cannot tell you now whether I would play one, two, or three more years.

You traveled the world, what conditions you found in Košice?
I am a resident here, I feel good here. The conditions are not bad, maybe I would improve certain things. Definitely in Sweden, Finland or NHL they have other possibilities, but the Košice club tries to create the best conditions for us, so the brand name HC Košice gets better each year.

What do you consider as your best hockey achievement?
Definitely the world champion title, and also the bronze that we gained one year later. I wish to win a title with HC Košice and I will try to do everything to get it.

What message would you like to leave to our fans?
I want to wish them Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, nice holidays, lot of presents, health and I am looking forward to see them supporting us during our matches! We will try to play well and make their visits in the stadium enjoyable.
