Košický odchovanec Jakub Demek má za sebou náročnú sezónu. Pre zranenie v nej stihol odohrať len zopár mesiacov. Napriek tomu sa však so svojim tímom Kamloops Blazers prepracoval až do finále kanadskej WHL.

Jakub si bol, vedomý že musí  absolvovať operáciu, no zranenie pokročilo do takého štádia, že musel ísť na zákrok skôr ako plánoval: „Problémy s ramenom som mal už dlhšie, nakoniec som musel ísť na operáciu už pred začiatkom sezóny.“ Vzhľadom na to, že je draftovaný tímom Vegas Golden Knights, celý priebeh mu zabezpečoval klub: „Všetko mi zabezpečilo Vegas , potom som sa presunul do svojho tímu, a tam prebiehala cela terapia a všetko potrebné. „

Po minuloročnom angažmáne v Edmonton Oil Kings sa Jakub presunul do tímu Kamloops Blazers, kde sa musel adaptovať nie  len na nové prostredie ale aj pozíciu v tíme: „Vzhľadom na to, že som bol vytrejdovaný, bolo to  pre mňa niečo úplne iné. Nový tím, nový systém, dokonca som hral na krídle, kdežto v podstate celú kariéru hrám centra. V prvých zápasoch som si na túto pozíciu musel zvykať ale postupom času to bolo lepšie. “

Prestup do Kamploops sa zrodil rýchlo: „Trejd prišiel pár týždňov po operácii ramena. Z Edmontonu po miulej sezóne odišli všetci kvalitní hráči, pretože už nespĺňali vekovú hranicu alebo šli do AHL resp. NHL. Tím potrebuje obmenu, ktorá potrvá pár rokov. Ja som na trejd nemal žiaden vplyv, všetko riešia agenti a tímy medzi sebou. “

Za dva a pol mesiaca odohral košický odchovanec 29 stretnutí, v ktorých strelil 8 gólov a na 14 prihrával. Celkovo si tak pripísal 22 bodov. So sezónou však spokojný nieje: „Sezóna bola pre mňa veľmi krátka. Po tak dlhej pauze je veľmi náročné naskočiť do rozbehnutej súťaže, takže to nebolo ideálne.” V playoff bol blízko k ďalšiemu triumfu ale Kamloops nedokázalo poraziť Seattle a Jakub si tak zavesil na krk striebornú medailu: „Je veľká škoda, že sa nám nepodarilo prejst cez Seattle, takže ihneď zavládlo sklamanie. Našťastie budeme mať druhú šancu na domácom Memorial cupe.” Kamploops hostí tento rok Memorial Cup, kde si zmerajú sily najlepšie mládežnícke tímy Kanady: „Máme silný tím, ktorý je schopný konkurovať najlepším v lige. “

Jakub sa teraz sústreďuje na letnú prípravu, po ktorej sa dozvie, kde bude hrávať: „V prvom rade musím mať dobrú letnú prípravu, keďže vlani bola pre mňa veľmi krátka a nedokázal som toho veľa natrénovať. Potom bude všetko záležať od kempov vo Vegas a od toho čo bude pre mňa najlepšie.”

V HC Košice sme získali majstrovský titul, stihol naše zápasy sledovať aj Jakub?: „Áno snažil som pozerať zápasy vždy keď som mohol. Som rád, že po 8 rokoch sme opäť získali titul.”

Košice offspring Jakub Demek has a difficult season behind him. He has played only several games due to an injury. Nevertheless, he and his team Kamloops Blazers have been able to advance into the finals of the Canadian WHL.

Jakub was aware that he needs to undergo an operation, however, the injury progressed into such state where the operation came sooner than planned: “I had problems with my shoulder for a longer time, it turned out I had to undergo an operation even before the start of the season.” Because he was drafted by Vegas Golden Knights the whole process was covered by the club: “Vegas has covered everything. After I joined my team again, the whole therapy and other necessities happened there.”

After last year’s engagement with Edmonton Oil Kings, Jakub transferred to Kamloops Blazers where he had to adapt not only to a new environment but also a new position in the team: “Considering I was traded, it was completely different for me. New team, new system, I even played wing even though I have played centre my whole career. First few games were all about assimilating but it got better with time.”

The transfer to Kamloops came about quickly: “The trade came few weeks after the shoulder operation. All quality players left Edmonton after last season either because they didn’t fit in the age range or proceeded to AHL or NHL. The team needs a change which will take a few years. I had no influence on the trade, everything was handled by agents and teams.”

In two and a half months, the Košice offspring played 29 games, scored 8 goals, and assisted 14 times. In total, he earned 22 points. Despite that, he is not satisfied with his season: “The season was too short for me. It is very difficult to jump into the competition in full swing after such a long pause. It wasn’t ideal.” He was close to another triumph in playoffs, but Kamloops couldn’t beat Seattle and Jakub therefore hung a silver medal on his neck: “It is a big shame we couldn’t pass Seattle; the disappointment was immediate. Luckily, we will get a second chance at the home Memorial Cup.” Kamloops hosts the Memorial Cup this year where the best Canadian youth teams will measure their strengths: “We have a strong team that is able to compete with the league’s best.”

Currently, Jakub is focused on summer training after which he gets to know where he is going to play: “Firstly, I must have a good summer training, especially because the last one was very short for me to train some things. After that everything will depend on Vegas’ camps and what will be best for me.”
