Staré múdre príslovie hovorí, že zajace sa počítajú až po love. Sezóna 2022-23 to plne potvrdila. Košický hokej v nej zažil peklo, očistec i raj. Oceliari sa dokázali vyšplhať z poslednej priečky na majstrovský trón, zažili pokriky v poloprázdnej Crow aréne i zimomriavky vypredanej Steel arény.

„Som veľmi šťastný,“ vyznal sa so zlatom na hrudi športový manažér Gabriel Spilar. „Keď človek vidí, čo všetko sa za úspechom skrýva, tak si ho cení o to viac. Ja však stále hovorím, že dobrí ľudia dostanú to dobré. Chce to len zdolať množstvo prekážok. Chlapci v šatni boli úžasní, Slováci si rozumeli s legionármi. Tréneri odviedli skvelú prácu, Duško Strharský pripravil oboch brankárov na jednotku. JJ nám vychytal základnú časť, Riči play-off. Pevne verím, že dostaneme šancu udržať tento tím pohromade.“

Košice čakali na majstrovský titul dlhých osem rokov, no už vlaňajšia sedemzápasová séria proti Slovanu naznačila, že obdobie temna končí. Tak tomu bolo aj v roku 2009, keď zlatu po desiatich rokoch pôstu predchádzala séria progresívnych sezón.

„Vedeli sme, že Košice už potrebujú titul. Potrebovali to Košice, potrebovali sme to aj my v klube, potrebovali to hráči,“ rozhovoril sa prezident klubu Július Lang. „V istom čase nás označovali za hrobárov hokeja, ale my sme nikoho neodvolávali. Podržali sme Dana Cemana, podržali sme Tima Saarikoskiho i všetkých ostatných. Podržali sme hráčov a hoci to boli ťažké chvíle, teraz cítime satisfakciu. Ukázali sme, že keď sú ľudia zomknutí a chcú, tak sa to dá.“

Tlaky zo strany nespokojných fanúšikov boli pritom v istej fáze sezóny veľké a vyeskalovali až do štrajku pred Steel arénou. Svoje si vtedy vypočul aj Gabriel Spilar. Vraj do Košíc dotiahol žoldnierov bez srdca a tí nie sú hodní obliekať oranžovo-čierny dres. Stále veľmi mladý športový manažér to vníma s odstupom času s nadhľadom.

„Otočil by som to na svoju rodinu. V tom čase ma podržala a hlavne manželka Petra pri mne stála za každých okolností. Mám tu výhodu, že som hokej hral a viem teda, že to nie je len o úspechu. Kritici tu boli vždy. Kedysi nadávali po krčmách, teraz na sociálnych sieťach. Mňa osobne však mrzeli útoky na hráčov. Ľudia nevedia, v akej pozícii sa nachádzajú, čo prežívajú doma, či sú zdraví. To by si museli ľudia vyskúšať. Nikto z nás nechodí do práce iných ľudí a nekritizuje ich tam. Taký je však svet sociálnych médií a s tým si nepomôžeme. Možno aj tá negatívna energia nám pomohla. Hlavným motorom však bola tá pozitívna. Kašľať na to, teraz sme šťastní,“ pousmial sa Spilar.

K predošlým štyrom hráčskym titulom pridal teraz prvý manažérsky. Ako s hlbokým výdychom priznáva, tentoraz to bolo výrazne náročnejšie. „Hráč ide po zápase domov k rodine a oddýchne si. V manažérskej pozícii musíte fungovať neustále. Ja som to však vzal ako výzvu a do rúk som dostal veľmi dobré karty. Som rád, že nám to vyšlo,“ odfúkol si 42-ročný Košičan. Za svoje manažérske vzory považuje mužov, pod ktorými oslavoval najväčšie hráčske úspechy. „Osobne som vždy vnímal ako topmanažérov Juraja Bakoša a Maroša Krajčiho. Obaja získali veľa titulov, ja mám teraz prvý. Je to však pekný štart novej kariéry. “

Podľa prezidenta Langa získavajú tituly iba úžasné partie. A taká sa v košickej šatni zišla. „Som neskutočne hrdý na celý tím, ale aj všetkých ľudí v klube. Tento úspech je spoločným dielom.“

Chuť úspechu je o to sladšia, že nešlo o nejakú dominantnú a bezproblémovú sezónu. Dostať sa z poslednej priečky na prvú bolo nesmierne náročné.

„Sebavedomím ma napĺňalo spoločné fungovanie domácich hráčov a importov. Potom prišlo tých posledných desať kôl základne časti a teambuilding v Tatrách. To som už cítil, že môžeme dosiahnuť niečo veľké,“ pomenoval Spilar obdobie, ktoré v ňom vzbudilo majstrovské očakávania.

Dozvuky jedenásteho košického titulu ešte istý čas pretrvajú, no potom sa vedenie klubu pustí do prípravných prác pre novú sezónu. Ziskom titulu získali Košice právo štartu v prestížnej Lige majstrov a tá predstavuje novú výzvu.

„Nechcem byť zlý, ale dokážeme postaviť ešte silnejší tím. Zahrať si Ligu majstrov by bolo krásne. Obzvlášť po jej zoštíhlení. Bola by to veľká výzva, ale toto rozhodnutie nie je v mojej kompetencii. Osobne by ma to však lákalo,“ pousmial sa Spilar, ktorý zažil CHL ako hráč. Prezident klubu Lang by mu podobnú skúsenosť doprial, no Liga majstrov je nateraz bohužiaľ stále pomerne stratový podnik. „Hovoril som s nimi už pred tromi či štyrmi týždňami. Je to ekonomicky veľmi náročné, ale určite si to zhodnotíme a účasť v Lige majstrov zvážime.“

“I’m very happy,“ admitted the golden sports manager Gabriel Spilar. “When a person realizes all the things that stand behind the success, they value it so much more. Personally, I always say that good people will be rewarded with more good. They just need to overcome many obstacles. Guys in a locker room were amazing, Slovaks got along with legionnaires. Coaches did a great work, Duško Strharský excellently prepared both goalies. JJ saved us in the regular season, Riči in playoffs. I firmly believe we will get a chance to keep this team together.“

Košice waited long eight years for a championship title, however, the last year’s seven games series against Slovan hinted at the end of the dark period. Like the year 2009 when the golden season after ten years of fasting was preceded by a series of progressive seasons.

“We knew Košice needed a title already. Košice needed it, we in the club needed it, players needed it,“ said club‘s president Július Lang. “At certain times we were referred to as the gravediggers of hockey, but we hadn’t withdrawn anyone. We have supported Dan Ceman, we have supported Timo Saarikoski, and everyone else. We have supported players and even though the times were tough, presently, we only feel satisfaction. We have shown that when people are tight and they want something, all is possible.“

Pressure from the unsatisfied fans was at times great and it escalated into a strike in front of Steel arena. Gabriel Spilar has been on a receiving end of the complaints. Supposedly, he had dragged to Košice mercenaries without heart who weren’t worthy to wear the orange-black jersey. Still a very young sports manager looks back at it with detachment.

“I would turn to my family. At that time, my wife Petra was my biggest supporter and she stood by my side on every occasion. I have the advantage that I played hockey myself, and I therefore know that it is not only about the success. Critics have always been here. Back in the day they were criticizing in pubs, now on social media. Personally, the attacks on players hurt me the most. People didn’t know what position they were in, what they were going through at home, if they were even healthy. People would have to experience that. Not one of us goes to the workplace of other people and criticizes them there. Maybe the negative energy helped us. But the main motor was the positive energy. Whatever, now we are happy,“ smiled Spilar.

He added one title as a manager to the four he earned as a player. With a deep sigh he admits that this time it was significantly harder. “After the game, player goes home to his family and rests. As a manager you must work constantly. I took it as a challenge, though, and was dealt a very good hand. I’m glad it has worked out for us,“ relaxed the 42-year-old Košice citizen. He considers men, whose leadership he had celebrated his greatest successes as a player under, his manager idols. “Personally, I have always considered Juraj Bakoš and Maroš Krajči as top managers. Both won many titles, I have just won my first one. It is a nice start of a new career.“

According to the president Lang, titles are won only by amazing parties. And such was present in the Košice’s locker room. “I am unimaginably proud of the whole team, also of all the people in the club. This success was due to team work.“

The taste of the success is much sweeter because the actual season wasn’t regarded as dominant or unproblematic. To get from the last to the first rank was immensely difficult.

“Teamwork of home players and imported ones filled me with confidence. Then the last ten rounds of regular season and the teambuilding in Tatras. I felt then we could achieve something great,“ Spilar pointed out time when championship expectations within him were awakened.

Reverberations of the Košice’s eleventh title will go on for some time, but after that the club leadership will start preparations for the next season. By winning the title, Košice had earned the right to participate in the prestigious Champions Hockey League and that poses a new challenge.

“I don’t want to be mean, but we can put together an even stronger team. To play Champions Hockey League would be beautiful. Especially after it has been thinned out. It would be a great challenge, although this decision is not mine to make. I, personally, would surely consider it,“ smiled Spilar who has experienced CHL once already as a player. Club’s president Lang would like to give him the option to experience it, but the League is unfortunately too big of a financial loss, so far. “I have spoken with them three or four weeks ago. Economically, it is very expensive, but certainly we will evaluate and consider the participation in the Champions Hockey League.“
