Košickú defenzívu v novej sezóne vystuží americký obranca Cooper Zech. Rodák zo South Lyonu v Michigane má v 24 rokoch za sebou už bohaté pôsobenie na zámorských klziskách. V sezóne 2020/2021 navyše obliekal dres extraligovej Nitry. O tom, prečo sa rozhodol vrátiť na Slovensko a aké má ambície s majstrovskými Košicami nám povedal v rozhovore.

Cooper pôsobil v minulosti v USHL či v univerzitnej lige NCAA. Neskôr posilnil Providence Bruins, odkiaľ zamieril aj do Lehigh Valley Phantoms či Rockford IceHogs. Počas piatich sezón v AHL odohral 144 zápasov, v ktorých nazbieral 38 bodov za 5 gólov a 33 asistencií.

Už pred časom hral vo farbách HK Nitra, za ktorých v pandemickej sezóne 2020/2021 odohral 15 zápasov so štatistikou 2+8. „Hľadal som nové ponuky a počul som  o Košiciach len v dobrom. Keď som videl, aké úspechy nazbierali v posledných rokoch, pomyslel som si, že by sa mi veľmi hodilo odohrať v tomto drese svoju prvú celú sezónu v Európe,“ odpovedal Cooper na otázku, ako sa zrodil jeho prestup. Podľa jeho slov si čas, ktorý už predtým strávil na Slovensku užil. „Teraz, keď bol čas uzavrieť nový kontrakt, hľadal som vhodnú príležitosť a slovenská extraliga mi veľmi vyhovela.“

Po tom, čo Košičania v apríli 2023 získali svoj majstrovský titul sa opäť potvrdilo, že očakávania Košíc sú stále najvyššie. Cooper Zech nám priblížil aj vlastné ambície, ktoré by rád naplnil v drese oceliarov. „Očakávam, že spoločne potiahneme ďalší úspešný rok. Snáď aj s úspechom na jeho konci tak, ako tomu bolo v predošlej sezóne,“ dodal americký bek.

24-ročný hráč nazbieral na farme už množstvo skúseností, ktoré by mohol zúročiť aj v metropole východu. „Verím, že pomôžem tímu ako playmaker. Mojou najväčšou devízou je pravdepodobne korčuľovanie, čo sa na široké klzisko v Košiciach hodí.“ To, že Cooper doposiaľ odohral na širokom klzisku len 15 zápasov ho neobmedzuje. Naopak tvrdí, že sa na extra rozmery ľadu v Európe teší a myslí si, že s jeho schopnosťami mu väčší priestor na ľade bude vyhovovať.

Američan potvrdil, že ponuky dostal aj z iných európskych líg. „Mal som viacero možností, no na Slovensku som si už zahral a mal som s tým pozitívnu skúsenosť. Pomohlo mi navyše to, že som dostal ponuku z Košíc, ktoré boli v poslednej sezóne úspešné. Teším sa na toto pôsobenie,“ uviedla letná posila. Dodal tiež, že sa teší, keď sem pricestuje a začne nová sezóna.

Cooper prichádza do jedného z najväčších klubov na Slovensku, ako aj do stánku so širokou základňou fanúšikov. „O košickom hokeji som počul len to najlepšie. Aj preto som sa rozhodol sem zamieriť. Klub na mňa zapôsobil už počas predošlého pôsobenia v extralige. Som rád, že môžem byť jeho súčasťou.“

Cooper Zech: I have only heard the best things about Košice hockey

Košice’s defense in the new season will be strengthened by defenseman Cooper Zech. The 24-year-old native of South Lyon, Michigan, has a rich experience from overseas ice. On top of that, he wore Nitra’s jersey in the 2020/2021 season. He told us why he had decided to come back to Slovakia and what his ambitions with Košice champions are in this interview.

Cooper has played in the USHL, as well as the university league NCAA. Later, he strengthened Providence Bruins from where he headed over to Lehigh Valley Phantoms and Rockford IceHogs. During five seasons in AHL, he played 144 games in which he collected 38 points for scoring 5 goals and 33 assists.

He already played for HK Nitra some time ago when he played 15 games during the pandemic 2020/2021 season and earned a 2+8 balance. “I was looking for new opportunities and I heard only good things about Košice. When I saw what achievements they collected in past years I thought it very beneficial for me to play a whole season in Europe wearing their jersey,” answered Cooper the question of how his transfer came to be. According to him, he had enjoyed the time he had already spent in Slovakia. “Now when it was time to sign a new contract I was looking for a convenient opportunity and the Slovak extraliga has been very satisfactory.”

After Košice won the title in April 2023, it was confirmed that Košice’s expectations are still the highest. Cooper Zech has told us about his own ambitions which he would like to fulfill in Steelers’ jersey. “I am expecting we will have another successful year together. Hopefully with the same happy ending just like the last season,” added the American defenseman.

The 24-year-old player has already gained much experience on a farm that he could utilize in the heart of eastern Slovakia. “I trust I can help the team by being a playmaker. My biggest strength would probably be skating which is perfect for Košice’s wide rink.” The fact that Cooper has played only 15 games on a wide rink so far does not restrict him. In fact, he states he is excited about the European-sized rink, and he thinks a larger ice surface will suit his abilities better.

The American confirmed he had gotten proposals from other European leagues, as well. “I have had more opportunities but I have already played in Slovakia before and had a positive experience. A proposal from Košice, which was very successful last season, helped, too. I am excited to be here,” stated the summer reinforcement. He added he is looking forward to arriving in the city for the start of the season.

Cooper comes to one of the biggest Slovak clubs with a great fanbase. “I have only heard the best things about Košice’s hockey. That is also why I decided to transfer here. The club impressed me back when I was playing in the extraliga before. I am glad to be a part of it.”
